Foundation Inspections
Houses built before 1979—before residential seismic building codes were consistently enforced—are more vulnerable to earthquake damage. Even a moderate earthquake can severely damage a pre-1979 home that has not been retrofitted to current building standards.
In a seismic retrofit, the foundation is "bolted" to the frame of the house, and when there are walls called "cripple walls" in the crawl space under the house, they are "braced" with plywood.

Fema Trained
The Brace + Bolt programs provide grants for a specific "building-code-compliant" seismic retrofit. This type of retrofit strengthens an older house to help prevent it from sliding off the foundation during an earthquake.
In a brace + bolt retrofit, the foundation is bolted to the frame of the house, and if there is a crawl space (or cripple wall), it is braced with plywood or OSB sheathing. This helps prevent the house from sliding or toppling off its foundation during an earthquake.
